Notes:
What is involved in problem solving at the application level. Merely explaining a process, even with the precision of a PEAnet, is at the first level of Dijkstra and van Merriënboer's representation of problems. Making prediction moves the learner to the learn-by-doing level. For a given situation making a prediction involves determining first the conditions that are relevant to the consequence. This involves finding the portrayal of the property(s) involved and determining its current value(s). The learner then must know the principle involved, that is, if <conditions> then <consequence> and determine which of several such relationship is applicable in the situation under consideration. The learner can then indicate the change property(s) value that will occur and the corresponding change in the portrayal of the entity(s) under consideration.
